John Cook The Man, The Golfer and The Golf Coach
John is one of the few top coaches that has played golf at the very highest level and who have won events on tour.
He started playing when he was 10 years old and soon became hooked on the game, twice winning the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire Junior Championship. His amateur career ended after he became the youngest winner of the English Amateur Championship, winning the British Youths and playing number one for England in the Home Internationals.
On turning professional at the age of 20 John won the first tournament he played in, The Nigerian Open. Over the next 5 years he won 3 other tournaments and was the winner of the piccadilly World Match Play Pro/Am individual, beating the top 8 players in the World at that time.
At the age of 25 John was unwittingly involved in a coup whilst playing in an exhibition match for the King of Morocco. This not only left him with a hand injury but also without the same desire to win as before.
So he turned to management partnering with his friend and mentor, Gary Player, at the Gary Player Country Club, Sun City . It was here that he started coaching and realised that he hade a gift that he was to maximise when he returned to the UK a few years later.
Over the last few years John has coached a number of different county junior & adult teams. In 1994 he became coach of the England Boys team which then went on to win the World Junior Team Championship three times in five years.
In 2003 he took up a similar role with the Thai junior team with almost instant results. Not only have the Thai girls won major championships but 3 of his protégées, Chinerat Phadungsil, Kiradesh Aphibarnrat and Nontaya Srisawang have all become very successful professional tour players on the European & Asian tours.
John's involvement in junior golf is far reaching. In 2002 he conceived the Red Bull MastersClass which brought Butch Harmon and his 3 coaching brothers to the UK for a series of intimate clinics with young golfers and PGA professionals.
He is also one of the leading golf writers and commentators having worked for Today's Golfer, Golf World, Golf Channel and GolfMagic.com. He is just about to release his new book "The Greatest Guide to Golf" and his instructional DVD "The Swing" continues to sell very well.
But despite working at the very highest level of golf John still has time for the high handicapper.
